Because of the generosity of Foundation donors, Sun River Health has started a new Contingency Management (CM) program with CHESS Health. This rewards-based initiative builds on our current CM program to help more patients living with HIV stay connected to the care that keeps them healthy.
In the next year, the program will support up to 100 people enrolled in Ryan White–funded services, which help uninsured and underinsured patients get the medical visits, medications, and support they need. Participants include those who are newly diagnosed, returning to care, or at risk of losing touch with their care.
The program has clear goals: increase completed HIV medical visits, keep up with regular lab tests, improve viral suppression rates, and lower the number of missed appointments. Each time a participant reaches a milestone - like an initial visit, completed labs, a follow-up appointment, or sustained viral suppression - they earn a reward, up to $250 in total. This helps encourage steady care and better health outcomes. CHESS Health’s platform makes the process easy by automatically loading rewards onto reusable debit cards and tracking every transaction. This gives our care teams a simple and reliable way to manage the program for many patients.
The impact of this program is bigger than just one person. People living with HIV have healthcare costs that are six to seven times higher than those without the virus, and the difference over a lifetime can reach millions of dollars. Keeping the virus under control not only protects the patient but also prevents its spread to others, helping avoid new cases and additional healthcare costs.
