Our Commitment
Sun River Health is committed to ensuring that our website is accessible to all visitors, including people with disabilities. Access to healthcare information is central to our mission, and we believe our digital resources should be usable by everyone, regardless of ability or the technology they use to access the web.
Accessibility Standard
We are working to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines are the internationally recognized standard for web accessibility and address the needs of people with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive disabilities.
Our accessibility efforts are ongoing. We conducted an initial accessibility audit of our website in March 2026 and have been actively remediating issues since April 2026. This work includes both site-wide improvements that benefit every page and targeted fixes for specific pages and features.
How We Test
We use a combination of tools and techniques to evaluate and improve accessibility across our website:
- Screen readers: We test with NVDA (Windows) and VoiceOver (macOS) to verify that content is announced correctly and navigation works as expected
- Automated scanning: We use WebAIM WAVE and browser developer tools to identify contrast issues, missing labels, structural problems, and other common barriers
- Keyboard testing: We navigate every reviewed page using only a keyboard to verify that all interactive elements are reachable, operable, and have visible focus indicators
- Manual review: We manually inspect heading hierarchy, landmark structure, link text, and form labels on each page
What We Have Done
Since our initial audit, we have made the following improvements to our website:
Site-Wide Improvements
These changes apply across the entire website through shared templates and code:
- Added a "Skip to content" link so keyboard and screen reader users can bypass repeated navigation
- Added a
<main>content landmark so assistive technology can identify the primary page content - Converted the mobile menu toggle from a non-interactive element to a proper button, making it keyboard accessible and identifiable to screen readers
- Restored visible keyboard focus indicators across the site so users navigating with a keyboard can see where they are on the page
- Added descriptive labels to the back-to-top button and popup images for screen reader users
- Added language attributes to Spanish-language content so screen readers pronounce it correctly
- Made the site logo a navigable link for keyboard users
Video Accessibility
We built a custom accessible video solution for embedded YouTube content that includes:
- Expandable text transcripts below each video
- A skip link that lets keyboard users jump directly from the video to its transcript
- Full keyboard navigation for video controls and transcript toggling
- Support for users who prefer reduced motion
- Privacy-respecting video embeds that limit tracking
Interactive Components
- Updated popup accordion components with proper ARIA attributes so screen readers can communicate their state (expanded, collapsed) and structure
- Added keyboard navigation and focus management to interactive popups
- Corrected heading hierarchy within interactive content for logical document structure
Color and Contrast
- Improved link visibility with underline styling to distinguish links from surrounding text across all pages
- Addressed color contrast issues to meet the minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio for normal text
- Fixed specific contrast issues on navigation elements, including the New York link on the home page
Page-by-Page Remediation
In addition to site-wide fixes, we have reviewed and remediated accessibility issues on individual pages and page groups, including:
- Home page: Reviewed with NVDA screen reader and macOS VoiceOver, added screen reader text to interactive buttons, fixed contrast issues, moved top menu into header landmarks
- Top 20 most-visited pages: Completed a full accessibility pass including heading order, link visibility, and keyboard navigation
- About Us section: Leadership, Our History, Our Partners, Volunteer, Advocacy, and Careers pages
- Foundation section: Foundation, Foundation Blog, Foundation Board Members, Events, Support a Cause, Start a Fundraiser, Planned Giving, Sun River Health Ambassadors, and Newsletter pages
- Your Care section: Our Approach, Insurance, Preparing for Appointments, Care Coordination, Billing Calculator, Your Medical Records, Find a Health Center, Patient Portal, Get and Stay Healthy, Prescription Savings, Find a Doctor, Make an Appointment, Pay a Bill, Telemedicine, and Patient Handbook pages
- Services pages: All English-language services pages have been reviewed and remediated
- Site-wide navigation pages: Donate, Patient Portal, Locations, and Spanish language entry point
- Health center pages: Corrected heading tag order for proper document structure
- Spanish-language pages: Completed a first-pass accessibility review and remediation of the Spanish-language versions of the site's pages, with additional review ongoing
Known Limitations
While we are committed to making our website as accessible as possible, some parts of the site include third-party content and tools that are outside our direct control. We have taken steps to reduce the impact of these limitations:
- YouTube video player: The YouTube embedded player is provided by Google and may have accessibility limitations. We have mitigated this by providing text transcripts for video content, adding skip links to bypass the player, and supporting keyboard navigation around the video.
- Donation platform: Our online donation functionality is provided by an external service. While we have selected this provider with accessibility in mind, we cannot guarantee full conformance of their embedded interface. If you encounter difficulty making a donation online, please contact us directly and we will assist you.
- Embedded forms: Some forms on our site are provided by third-party services. We have added descriptive titles to these forms to improve screen reader identification, but some elements within the forms may have limitations.
- PDF documents: Some documents on our site are available as PDFs. We are working to ensure these documents are accessible. If you have difficulty accessing a PDF, please contact us and we will provide the information in an alternative format.
- Ongoing content review: Our website contains many pages of content. We have completed accessibility reviews of our home page, top 20 most-visited pages, About Us section, Foundation section, Your Care section, all Services pages, health center pages, site-wide navigation pages, and Spanish-language pages. We will continue remediating additional pages over time.
